Materials:
square piece of fabric cut to the desired size of the pillow*
2 bandanas
2 squares of felt, each the same size as the square piece of fabric
transparent straightedge
fiberfill
sewing equipment
optional: rotary cutter and self-healing mat
*guest Sally Cheney used a 16-inch square for her pillow.
Steps:
- Since bandanas are often printed off-center, center the square piece of fabric on top of the bandana's design.
- Cut the bandanas to the size of the square piece of fabric. Using a transparent straightedge and a rotary cutter makes this step easy and quick.
- Cut one bandana in half on the diagonal, and sew a line of long stitches close to the edge of the longest side of each resulting triangle. Gently pull the thread to gather the long edges.
- Find the center of the gathered side of one triangle; pin it to the center of one side of the remaining square bandana. Arranging the gathers as desired, pin the rest of the gathered side of the triangle to the side of the square and sew the two sides together. Repeat the process with the other triangle on the opposite side of the square.
- Place the square bandana wrong side down on the work surface, and fold the two triangle pieces over the square so that the right sides of the triangles are against the right side of the square. Make sure the tips of the triangles are away from the sides of the square.
- Line up the square piece of fabric on top of the bandanas, then sandwich the entire ensemble between the two pieces of felt. Sew all four sides, and leave an opening on one of the two sides where a triangle is attached to allow for turning the pillow.
- Trim the seams and corners, and turn.
- Stuff the pillow with fiberfill, tidy up the opening (it doesn't have to be sewn), and tie the points of the bandanna together in a square knot.
Note: Another way to make a quick bandana pillow is to place a pillow on the wrong side of a bandana so that each corner of the pillow is between two corners of the bandana. Bring the points of the bandana together in the middle of the pillow, and sew a button at the center of both sides.
