The Dilemma

Sam Kivett discusses the challenges in the room with design coordinators Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge. They decide to replace the dated dressers, bring in additional pieces to store the clothes and books that are currently crowding the room, warm up the white walls and come up with a window treatment that will enhance rather than hide the French doors.

The Solution

Here's how the design team transforms the bland bedroom for under $1,000:

  • The walls are painted a soft green color.

  • The storage issue solved with a dark-stained armoire, two nightstands and a bench Kivett purchased at a hotel liquidator. Burbridge finds two unfinished dressers and stains them to match. Kivett adds a shelf to the inside of the armoire to hold the 19-inch television.
  • Burbridge creates custom fabric for the headboard and bench seat. He dyes heavy cotton fabric a deep wine color and uses fabric paint, a stencil and self-adhesive paper reinforcements to create a custom paisley design. More headboard ideas>>
  • Baltzer upholsters a bench top with the custom-made paisley fabric. She cuts and layers a piece of 1/2" plywood, 2" foam, batting and fabric to fit the top, staples the fabric to the back and attaches the cushion to the seat with wood screws.

  • The sheer curtains are replaced with neutral window treatments with blackout lining.

  • Accessories include a new mirror, table lamps and bedside lamps.
